It’s not every day that you have an opportunity or even just learn of a place to explore that is truly a remote and hidden gem. But today is that day. Did you know that the northernmost point of South Carolina’s coast is a private island that you can explore but that can only be reached by kayak or on land by horseback? Keep reading for more on this unforgettable adventure in South Carolina.
Waties Island, which you'll see spelled "Waites" in places, is located at the northernmost point of our state at the North Carolina border of our coastline.
Inlet Point Plantation offers one-hour beach horseback riding tours onto the island for ages 7 and up. You will cross over from a point on the beach with a pathway and bridge leading to Waties Island.
You'll see the beautiful Dunn Sound as you cross over the bridge.
More experienced riders may enjoy a bit of cantering along the beach during your ride.
There may not be anyone else on the island while you're there, unless there are others doing tours as well. It will be peaceful and serene!
Sunset tours are available as well as private proposal rides. It's also a perfectly unique and romantic date night or anniversary celebration activity.
If you'd rather travel to the Island by water or if you'd like the opportunity to explore on foot a little, you'll want to book a kayak tour with Glass Bottom Kayak Tours. You can choose between a regular kayak or one that is clear where you can see into the water through the kayak!
The Private Island Shelling Tour allows you to spend some time combing the beach areas once you reach the island for shells.
If you're planning the adventure during turtle nesting season, you can select the Sea Turtle Nesting Tour, where you'll kayak to a sea turtle habitat.
You may see tracks where the turtles have made their way onto the beach to lay nests. Depending on the timing of your visit, you may get to watch the baby sea turtles hatch and possibly even see them making their way to the ocean!
Whichever type of tour you choose, you're sure to create unforgettable memories.
When you’re done with this adventure, be sure to check out the new restaurant and entertainment venue at The Grand Strand.
