Most people don't know South Carolina has a natural bridge and it's a moderately easy hike to get there.
Natural bridges of all sorts grace many states in the U.S., including Virginia, Arizona and California - and surprisingly, South Carolina. Located at Keowee Toxaway State Park, the Natural Bridge is a geological wonder right here in the Palmetto State. The trailhead begins just behind the park office.
The trail to the only natural bridge in South Carolina starts off pretty level. It's clearly marked, but if you look around you should easily find the box that contains printed trail maps.
A tidy set of steps signals you're about to drop down to the first crossing of Poe Creek, the body of water the natural bridge also crosses.
The short 1.5 mile looped trail has one section that's very steep with an elevation gain of a few hundred feet in approximately two-tenths of a mile.
This beautiful hike will lead you past several small waterfalls and cascades as you make your way to the big photo op.
You'll know you're there when you get to the huge flat rock with the creek seemingly running through the rock!
No one can say for certain how this natural bridge formed. Perhaps this huge flat rock was left here during a major geologic event and the smaller rocks and earth underneath were washed away by Poe Creek. Either way, this natural bridge is a hidden gem in the Palmetto State.
