It may come as no surprise that South Carolina's first state park was opened on the sandy shores that front the Atlantic Ocean. Likewise, it's probably no shocker that the first state park opened in Myrtle Beach... the state's crown jewel for family vacations in the 1930s.
This sweet sandy spot to get away opened on July 1, 1936 and still dishes up a mile of undeveloped beach along the Grand Strand.
At only 312 acres, Myrtle Beach State Park is the fifth smallest in South Carolina.
But it delivers big in other ways, especially if your number one goal is to relax and enjoy a day (or more) at the beach.
The park offers enough to keep you busy for many days, including a blissful new sunrise over the ocean to gawk at each and every morning.
The pier is a favorite among fishing enthusiasts. For a small fee you can fish all day, even without a South Carolina fishing license.
Or, you can just enjoy the ocean breeze and the unique views the pier offers.
In addition to the long stretch of undeveloped beach, the park has some other amenities that will stand out if you really love the outdoors.
From a couple of hiking trails that lead through a maritime forest laden with oak and magnolia trees...
to a nature center filled with educational info for the whole family, the park offers a quiet escape for those who either visit for the day or choose to spend one or more nights.
There are six cozy cabins you can reserve for a perfect getaway. (You can imagine that supply and demand requires you to plan this excursion well in advance if you want to stay in a cabin.)
But you could opt for an old-fashioned camping trip and bunk down in one of the 230+ camping sites. Some have full electric and water hookups; others are rustic seasonal tent sites.
South Carolina's first state park is one of its most treasured - and it's easy to see why!
If you haven't visited Myrtle Beach State Park in a while (or ever!), then make plans to enjoy some down time, front beach style, at this fantastic park in the Palmetto State.
