Hiking doesn't have to include a strenuous workout to be enjoyable. Sometimes, you just want an easygoing, leisurely adventure where you can reconnect with Mother Nature without feeling a burn, right? The two-mile Sandhills Trail is one that doles out plenty of pretty vistas while circling a dreamy little lake with lush vegetation all around.
Pack a picnic, load up the car, and head to Sesqui (a.k.a. Sesquicentennial) State Park to enjoy some fresh air and the easy little hike around the park's 30-acre lake.
In all, the trail is two miles in length and features a mixed surface of paved or gravel cover. It's suitable for everything from a fast-paced walk to a relaxed stroll.
You'll pass through a soggy wooded section where boardwalks will keep your feet high and dry. Enjoy the shade and the sounds of nature as you admire the moss covered scenery.
At approximately the halfway point from the parking area, the sound of rushing water will fill the air as you emerge from the forest alongside Jackson Creek, which spills into the lake you're circling.
The bridge is a wonderful place to pause as you cross the creek, admiring the view and musing at just how far you've traveled with barely any elevation gain.
(If you were looking for a flat, easy trail today, then you certainly found it here at Sesqui.)
Waterfalls are harder to come by outside of the mountain lakes region in the upstate and this one doesn't disappoint (even though the steps over which the water flows are man-made).
There are plenty of places at Sesqui and along this trail to stop for a bit and enjoy the picnic lunch you packed. Parts of the park can get relatively crowded on a beautiful day, so when you see a spot that's empty, be sure to grab it.
Can't get enough of this beautiful adventure? The park has two more trails to pique your interest and keep this fun outing moving forward while you're here. The trail map is below and more info about the trails can be found here.
