Tourism figures are a full testament that folks the world over know what a joy it must be to live in South Carolina - a sentiment that's echoed by natives and locals alike. Mountain lakes, an inland sea, and more than 180 miles of coastline mean choices are nearly endless for enjoying a day by, or in, the water. The next time you're seeking a day at the beach, don't pass up the option to discover the charm of Huntington Beach State Park.
No matter the season, there are numerous ways for the entire family to enjoy a day at HBSP.
Year-round, the three miles of pristine beach are open to park goers who enjoy countless activities along the breezy and roomy uncrowded beach.
And lifeguards are on duty in a designated are during summer months. But there's more to enjoy at HBSP than a gorgeous, untouched beach...
The park features a relic left over from the land's previous occupants. Atalaya Castle was the winter home of Anna Hyatt Huntington and Archer Huntington, who also owned what is now the nearby Brookgreen Gardens.
The castle adds exquisite beauty to the park and any visit to HBSP without seeing Atalaya Castle wouldn't be complete. You'll find it open to explore the inside most days from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., unless there's a special event taking place. As you can imagine, many couples get married in this stunning setting.
Nature enthusiasts will go wild over the boardwalk trails in the park. Check out a freshwater lagoon on one of the treks; on the other, travel into a saltwater marsh.
The preserve at Huntington attracts more than 300 birds — many of them are seasonal visitors that return each year. Pictured here, the Rosette Spoonbill is a winter guest. Expect to marvel over wildlife galore as you explore the three trails at HBSP.
Want to spend the night? The park offer 173 campsites. Many of them are carved right into the natural flora of the maritime forest. With so much to see and do within the park, you may never want to leave the property during your camping trip.
The office, camp store, and gift shop carries a variety of items, including souvenirs, so be sure to check it out.
