Lake Strom Thurmond is a 70,000-acre manmade reservoir with 1,200 miles of shoreline. The largest Corps of Engineers lake east of the Mississippi River, it's located on the South Carolina-Georgia border. At various places along the shoreline, you'll find sandy beaches and designated swim areas, three in South Carolina and 11 in Georgia. Also in our state, you can enjoy a visitor center at the lake which features educational displays about the lake and its ecosystem, special programs, and a scuba diving site in South Carolina for a unique underwater adventure.
The Thurmond Lake Visitor Center is located along Clarks Hill Highway in Clarks Hill, a tiny McCormick County town in South Carolina with a population of less than 100 people.
This is a popular location for scuba divers who travel from within the state as well as from places in Georgia such as Savannah, Atlanta, and Macon to dive and explore beneath Lake Thurmond.
While diving, you'll have extra company who enjoy tagging along for the experience.
They are very persistent and can even seem a bit nosey, quite interested in what you're doing in their space!
In August 1989, a dive club in Augusta sunk an airplane into Lake Thurmond to create an artificial reef.
The hull was stripped of insulation, hydraulic and fuel lines, and anything else that could snag or puncture scuba gear, and 400 pounds of bagged cement was dumped by the divers to anchor the plane to the rocks.
The site is also used for technical training and underwater navigation.
There are other things at this site to look for while diving, including a sunken ski boat nearby, several large boulders, plastic flamingos, a toy skeleton, and other things guys who have been diving here over the years have placed for others to find. So you just never know what you may come across while exploring at this scuba dive site in South Carolina!
If you've never been scuba diving before but are interested in learning, there are places where you can get scuba diving training in several areas of the state. You may also be interested in this book: Scuba Diving: The authoritative guide to safe, enjoyable diving.
