Across the street from South Carolina's number one outdoor attraction, Brookgreen Gardens, sits the entrance to one of the state's most exclusive beachfront state parks: Huntington Beach State Park. Perhaps because it's surrounded by so many well-traveled beaches along the Grand Strand, this beach is practically hiding in plain sight.
Known widely as being connected to the Huntingtons who owned Brookgreen Gardens, this property was actually the spot of the winter home of Anna Hyatt Huntington and husband Archer M. Huntington. Their residence, Atalaya Castle, still stands as a magnificent reminder of their presence in what is now a state park. Atalaya Castle was where Anna Hyatt Huntington's studio was located and many of her sculptures created here are located across Hwy. 17 at Brookgreen Gardens.
As for Huntington Beach State Park, a recent fire believed to have been sparked by lightning damaged the Nature Center in July, but the park is open and fully operational otherwise.
If you've been looking for that perfect quiet beach that still has amenities like nice parking and facilities, then look no further.
This may be the last protected beach along the grand strand with absolutely no buildings and condos perched up on the dunes.
Spend the day in the sun and surf and when you feel like taking a break go explore Atalaya Castle, the winter home of the Huntingtons.
Or hit the trail on the two-mile Sandpiper Pond Trail...
...or just enjoy a walk along this pristine stretch of beach.
Compared to other beaches along South Carolina's northern coastline, Huntington Beach State Park is a quiet little less-traveled hidden beach that will take you a million miles away from it all.
