South Carolina's iconic Palmetto Trail travels a distance of 500 miles all the way across the Palmetto State. To make it easier to gain entry or to break up the hike into smaller segments, the trail is broken down into passages. One of those passages, the Lake Moultrie Passage, travels 26.8 miles (one way!) all the way around nearly a full side of Lake Moultrie.
Whether you hop a bicycle or just hit the trail on foot, this is one trail you won't soon forget.
As the state's third largest lake, Lake Moultrie featues 60,000 acres of H2O over which to gaze as you make this hike around part of the lake's perimeter.
You'll encounter a variety of terrain along the hike (or ride, if you're bicycling).
Some hikers report that after a heavy rain there can be some very muddy parts of the trail, so you might want to avoid this hike during the rainy season in the Lowcountry.
If you've never hiked a multi-day hike where you are forced to carry your supplies and bedding on your back, then you might want to consider chopping this trail up into smaller portions — especially if you are crunched for time or just don't want the hassle of toting your necessities around for a few days.
However you decide to conquer the Lake Moultrie Passage of the Palmetto Trail, there's one thing for certain: with the trail's tendency to skirt right along the water's edge for most of the route, you won't find another hike quite like this one in the whole state.
Have you already mastered this 26.8-mile hike?
We'd LOVE to hear all about your conquest. Be sure to sound off in the comments!
