When you think of Hilton Head Island, what comes to mind? Maybe the long stretches of pristine white sand that rim the island. Maybe the miles of paved trails that wind through shaded forests all over town. Maybe the delicious, fresh-from-the-boat seafood you can order at a number of waterfront restaurants. Or maybe...you think of the overlooks.
No? Well, you should, because Hilton Head is full of them. There's the top of Hilton Head Lighthouse, of course, that lets you see for miles in all directions. And there are boardwalks and trails overlooking historic rice paddies, salt marshes, palmetto and live oak forests, and more.
Off the beaten path on the Port Royal Sound side of Hilton Head Island is another breathtaking view of South Carolina that, especially at low tide, encompasses miles of land, sea, and sky.
You can find this amazing view at Fish Haul Beach Park.
Fish Haul Beach Park is a public beach access point located at 124 Mitchellville Road. In addition to excellent views, the park offers a medium-sized parking lot, bathrooms, and a rinse station to help keep sand from following you home.
From the parking lot, a short trail of woodchips gives way to a firm, all-access mat that leads right out onto the beach.
It's a quiet beach with plenty of room to spread out and enjoy the beauty of nature.
And it's a spot filled with wildlife. During all seasons of the year, expect to see a variety of birds and, at low tide, plenty of snails and hermit crabs.
You may also get a glimpse of turtles (they lay eggs on the shore each spring), horseshoe crabs, jellyfish, or a host of other fascinating sea creatures.
Spring, summer, fall, and winter, wave after powerful wave rolls in and break before sweeping back out to sea, tamed by this windswept boundary of sand.
So check the tide charts, pack a lunch, slather on some sunscreen, and come enjoy a beautiful view of sand, sky, sea, marsh, and forest!
