Seeking places where you can avoid the crowds in South Carolina? You're practically guaranteed to have at least six feet between you and anyone else when you visit the otherworldly beach at South Carolina's Botany Bay Heritage Preserve.
While, for some people, the thought of visiting a driftwood beach may conjure up images of a bunch of dead trees scattered about, there's just something positively surreal about the driftwood at Botany Bay. For starters: it's not all drifting!
Much of this maritime boneyard is still firmly anchored into the ground by deep root systems. The impact of seeing the upright bones while smelling the salty ocean breeze and hearing the waves crash ashore has a way of nurturing the soul.
Just steps from the waterline an awe-worthy beautiful maritime forest has been wiped clean by storms ravaging the area time and time again.
Other 'bones' have already toppled and begun to turn white, bleached by the salt and the power of the sun's rays.
Perhaps it's a matter of simply seeing Mother Nature reclaim her gifts to humanity, or even seeing the old trees slowly make their way out to sea, sometimes taking years to get there.
The remote location of the driftwood beach at Botany Bay is one of the reasons you'll never encounter a truly crowded scene here. From where you'll park, it's a half-mile walk over a clearly marked pathway just to get to the boneyard here.
And while there are plenty of 'bones' to admire...
There are also signs of past visitors leaving tasteful signs that say someone else was here before you.
You'll find Botany Bay Heritage Preserve at the end of Botany Bay Road on South Carolina's Edisto Island. The dotted green line on this map shows the location of the pathway to the beach.
