There are so many bucket-list-worthy South Carolina State Parks that one could easily spend a lifetime experiencing each of them. From the Lowcountry to the rugged mountains, South Carolina's diverse terrain lends itself to an impressive collection of parks. There's truly no wrong answer, but one that impresses us time and time again is Devils Fork State Park.

Located in Oconee County, this magnificent park is a treasure trove of natural beauty. Perhaps most notably, it offers access to the crown jewel of South Carolina's Blue Ridge Mountains, the 7,565-acre Lake Jocassee. The water is deep, with an average depth of 154 feet and a maximum depth of 351 feet. It's also notoriously clean, thanks to the four mountain streams and waterfalls that flow into it. For this reason, it's often considerably cooler than other South Carolina lakes, and it's also an ideal habitat for trout.

For a bit of historical context, the lake was created in 1973 by the state of South Carolina in partnership with Duke Energy. The Jocassee Dam forms the lake, measuring an impressive 385 feet high and 1,750 feet long. Long before, the area was inhabited by the Cherokee Nation, and the name Jocassee means "Place of the Lost One." After the Revolutionary War, the Cherokee were forced to give up their land to the U.S. Government.
Today, most of the land is owned by Duke Power or the State of South Carolina. Visiting Devils Fork State Park is one of the best ways to experience the lake. If you've never visited before, you'll quickly become enchanted by the crystal-clear water and rugged mountains. One of the best ways to experience the park is to hike through it. There are two main trails within the park: the Oconee Bell Trail, which is currently closed for repair, and the Laurel Fork Trail, accessible only by boat.

Why We Love It: It's taken several trips for me to figure out my perfect "weekender bag that's TSA approved," but I've found my perfect carry on with the TOBIQ Colorado 30L. Rock Hill was one of three South Carolina cities named a "Boom Town" by the New York Times in December 2021. The list of 20 total cities was determined based on changes in population, gross domestic product, household income, number of housing units and commercial establishments, and unemployment rates. In 2024, "Money" magazine included Rock Hill in its list of best places to live. People are certainly taking notice of this area of the state, and if you're interested in checking it out one of the best places to start is Fountain Park in Rock Hill.
Located on East Main Street, Fountain Park offers a scenic space in the heart of downtown Rock Hill with green space and a small performance venue.
Of course, as you can gather from the name of the park, the main attraction is an enchanting 90-foot by 70-foot water fountain with illuminated displays and cycles of dancing water shows. It takes about 10-15 minutes to see all four of the different ensembles and the water reaches over 30 feet at its highest moments.
A picturesque view of Rock Hill's beautiful downtown district serves as the perfect backdrop for the fountain. From this angle, you can see the historic First Presbyterian Church of Rock Hill which began in 1854 when Rock Hill established as a railroad town.
Rock Hill's Fountain Park is a lovely place to stop by for a moment to relax and enjoy the peaceful sounds and sights of the fountain, day or night. There are free parking spaces nearby.
Sit on the bench and rest your feet at Fountain Park in Rock Hill, the perfect spot for break if you've been walking around downtown shopping or dining.
A great time to visit would be every third Friday from May to September during the Food Truck Friday event held at Fountain Park in Rock Hill. Admission is free and along with the food you'll also enjoy children's activities and live music.
And then during the Christmas season, Rock Hill celebrates big with the Christmasville festival each year. Fountain Park is even more beautiful decked out for the holidays!
