South Carolina's beaches are so popular that every so often they can feel a bit cramped to us locals. Luckily, there are a few that are hidden that we can escape to. The ultimate hidden beach in South Carolina can only be reached by boat. If you have your own boat, then that's perfect. But for those of us who don't own a boat, there's another way to get there. Check out this incredible "secret" beach...
If you're seeking a quiet beach with plenty of solitude, then Bulls Island located near Awendaw is the perfect solution for you. The island is some 4,900 acres stranded in the waters off the coast of South Carolina. It serves as a barrier island protecting the mainland.
The only way to reach Bulls Island (also known as Big Bulls Island and North Bulls Island) is by way of a boat. If you have one, then you can bring your own boat over to the island. Bulls Island has miles of beachfront to explore, or just sit and admire.
It also has a picturesque, yet somewhat lonesome, boneyard beach. The boneyard was created from decades of storms that washed the sand out from under the forest along the coast. Now all that remains are skeletons of trees and huge pieces of lovely driftwood.
But driftwood isn't the only thing you're likely to find on a deserted beach. Without the masses of people pilfering through the shells that regularly wash ashore, they are more than plentiful on Bulls Island!
The island also has a couple of hiking trails — and more than a few alligators that linger near watering sources on the trails.
And if you don't happen to have your own boat to get to Bulls Island, then you can call up Coastal Expeditions to catch their Bulls Island Ferry service. It will drop you there in the morning and then it returns a couple of times a day (in season) and you can return at your leisure as long as you don't miss the last ferry of the day.
You're sure to love this hidden secret known as Bulls Island in South Carolina. This one-of-a-kind beach is only accessible by way of boat!
