Most people who visit Charleston don't realize there is a zoo in the city. It's located at Charles Towne Landing State Historic Site, a 664-acre site along the marsh and the Ashley River that is home not only to a natural habitat zoo, but also miles of trails, historic exhibits, ongoing archaeological digs, and more.
The zoo is located in the Animal Forest. Here in this zoo unique to the Lowcountry, you'll discover only creatures that were indigenous to the area in 1670.
Within the zoo's 22 acres is a variety of animals that were here when the first European settlers arrived in the Lowcountry.
Coinsidentally, if you're not entirely familiar with Charles Towne Landing, this park also contains the very location where the first settlers docked their ship all those centuries ago.
In another part of this huge adventure park, you'll get to climb aboard a replica of that ship.
Back to the zoo, a lovely walking trail leads through the forest. Alligators, wolves, even bears (yes, bears!) can be found along the way.
It's one of the most unusual zoos in the entire state!
While you're here, be sure to take the time to explore all that Charles Towne Landing has to offer. An ideal place to begin is at the Visitor Center.
In all, the adventures at this park include the Animal Forest, a museum, historic cemeteries and burial sites, a historic home, and...
at least one avenue of oak trees perfect for a keepsake photo of your adventure!
