With so many great state parks in South Carolina you might find it difficult to decide which ones to visit first. Hunting Island State Park is the most visited state park in all of South Carolina, with more than one million visitors per year. But don't think it's over crowded. Because it's not.
Hunting Island's 5,000 acres includes four miles of pristine coastline. This makes it a perfect place to get lost for a day in the Ace Basin of the Lowcountry in South Carolina.
Getting there is easy. Navigate to Beaufort, SC and then head South on 21. Drive 15 miles and you're there.
Beach walking at Hunting Island is instantly rewarding to at least four of the five senses.
The state park is home to nearly 10 miles of trails carved into the foliage. You can view a trail map here.
Hunting Island is home to many creatures.
...and is a photographer's paradise.
The South Carolina State Park's website says even seahorses are found in one lagoon on the far end of the island. Sadly, this is not a photo of said lagoon.
Some trails give you a firsthand look at the marsh and creatures that live there.
So much water, so many fish...so much time! A day without your cell phone is a day of luxury.
Oh but wait, the park now has wireless Internet access available for people staying in the campground. (Spoiler alert.)
One of the park's most visible landmarks is the Hunting Island Light.
It's no longer a functioning navigational light house and is usually open for tours, but check with the park first if you're counting on going inside.
When it was an operational navigation lighthouse, it was visible for 17 miles.
The light's climb is a modest 167 stairs.
And the payoff at the top....
...is rewarding.
Visit the Nature Center on the island to explore the fishing pier...
...and some great educational information that you'll find here.
Sadly, erosion has taken it's toll on Hunting Island. The park used to offer cabins for rent. This lone beach cottage is testament to the hit the island's mass has taken in recent years. It's also another one of the most photographed landmarks on Hunting Island.
If you're new to South Carolina, then this is the place to start exploring our wonderful state parks. And if you're a native, then this is the place to revisit in 2016.
