The small town of Smithfield is located in Providence County, including a few historic villages we all know and love. But did you know it's also possible to walk through a peaceful, quiet forest preserve without leaving town? When you need to get away from it all and keep people at a distance, take a stroll through Wolf Hill.
Wolf Hill Forest Preserve is a long, rocky ridge that runs right through town.
Since 2000, the property has been owned and operated by Smithfield Land Trust.
This peaceful preserve offers several miles of hiking trails and a couple of stunning scenic overlooks.
With the exception of the challenging Mary Mowry Trail, all the hikes are gentle and rolling, meaning they're perfect for any skill level.
You'll see plenty of mature oak and maple trees here, along with some pine and hemlock.
Rhode Island might be known for its beautiful coastal beaches, but the inland natural wonders here are totally underrated.
While this is public property and open all year, the space rarely gets crowded.
If you want to put some distance between yourself and others, come hit these trails and forget about the world for awhile.
Wolf Hill is even home to a piece of history -- there's a World War II memorial site here.
In 1943, three U.S. servicemen died here after their plane crashed on Wolf Hill due to an engine failure.
If you enjoy checking out wildlife, you might be in luck when you visit.
Wild turkeys, deer, songbirds and hawks are often spotted here.
Wolf Hill Forest Preserve is open all year long, so there's no rush in checking it out.
But if you happen to find yourself in the area and need a little exercise, it will refresh and rejuvenate you.
Have you hiked at Wolf Hill yet? It's easy to see why so many Rhode Islanders love it.
