Rhode Island has some of the most beautiful ocean beaches in the country, earning us our nickname, the Ocean State. That being said, some of our smaller freshwater swimming holes are just as inviting on a hot summer day. In fact, Olney Pond happens to have its own swimming beach that rivals anything you'll find by the sea.
You'll find Olney Pond in Lincoln Woods State Park, a 627-acre park full of rugged natural beauty.
The park is located in Lincoln, about four miles northwest of Pawtucket.
The park pretty much centers around Olney Pond, which should really be considered a lake.
The pond is a 128-acre reservoir that makes up the heart of the park.
Olney Pond is a popular place for boating and fishing...
... but what really makes this place special is the soft, sandy beach park on the shoreline.
There are plenty of beachside picnic tables, lounging areas, restrooms, and even a bathhouse, allowing you to enjoy your day to the fullest. Some people say that being here feels like being in a scene from a 1960s beach flick.
Some people feel uneasy swimming in the ocean, but here, it's just still, refreshing, contained water perfect for cooling off on a hot day.
Lifeguards are on duty during the summertime. But if you'd like to enjoy a more secluded swim, there are also plenty of places to do that away from the beach and crowds.
We all know that this summer will look a lot different than most here in Rhode Island, and Olney Pond isn't open for swimming quite yet.
But the park, and the pond, will be open for day use as soon as possible. Just use good judgement and keep your distance from your fellow Rhode Islanders.
