Rhode Islanders tend to fall into one of two categories. We either absolutely love winter or we loathe it. If you fall into the category of well, loathing it, you might find that your next winter in Rhode Island is a little easier if you keep these seven things in mind. Here's how to make sure you're properly prepared for another one of those Rhode Island winters.

1. If you have a favorite ice cream or other warm weather treat, enjoy it as much as possible in the summer.

Many of Rhode Island's top ice cream shops and the beloved Del's Lemonade stands close in the fall.

2. Pay attention to neighboring states' weather reports.

Rhode Island is a small state, and it has been said that we basically get a little bit of whatever Massachusetts and Connecticut are having. This tends to be true. Consider adding Massachusetts and Connecticut to your weather app, so you're always prepared for what's coming.

3. Winter often arrives in stages.

You might feel freezing temperatures and even see the first snowfall and think winter is here to stay, only to be met with sunshine the following week. Winter in Rhode Island has its own agenda -- it comes and goes when it feels like it. Just go with the flow, and you'll discover that winters in Rhode Island aren't really that bad at all.

4. But once the winter weather does arrive, it might stick around for awhile.

We enjoy warm summers in the Ocean State, but it isn't unheard of to see snow flurries in April. Why not take advantage of snow when it's here? Go snow tubing or sled writing for an epic winter adventure in Rhode Island. For something a little more demure, glide around the ice at your nearest ice skating rink.

5. You shouldn't miss out on the beaches just because it's winter.

Yes, it's cold, and you won't want to take off any layers or have a picnic. But our beaches are just as beautiful in the wintertime, and they're nice and quiet, perfect for a leisurely stroll along the sand. Chances are the only souls you'll encounter on your adventure are local wildlife.

6. Prepare for it to get dark early.... really early.

Our northern position means that the long, dark nights of winter kick off pretty early. You might drive to work in the dark and home in the dark. While it's not ideal for most people, if you're a night owl, you might think you're in heaven.

7. Despite all this, Rhode Island winters are absolutely beautiful and not a thing to dread.
