Hiking doesn't have to be an all-day event -- sometimes, a quick little stroll is all you need. Lime Rock Preserve Trail, one of the best hikes in Rhode Island, offers just that, with plenty of beautiful scenery despite its short-and-sweet distance. Take a look:
Although it's just 1.8 miles long, Lime Rock Preserve Trail in Lincoln is everything you could possibly want in a hike. Conveniently located a mere 10 minutes from downtown Providence, this short-and-sweet adventure is perfect for a spontaneous family outing or quick sunrise stroll.
An elevation gain of under 100 feet means all ages and skill levels are welcome to embark on the journey. You'll traverse a heavily forested landscape that boasts a vast array of wildlife, such as warblers, who chirp their hellos at passersby. With each successive step, you become more deeply enveloped by the overwhelming enchantment.
You'll encounter 30 rare plant species here at the preserve, which is more than anywhere else in Rhode Island. Ferns, wildflowers, fungi, and so much more unique vegetation flourishes alongside limestone slabs.
After meandering along the path for a while, you'll hear the faint sound of running water in the distance. The source? A slow-flowing brook that ambles peacefully through the woodland terrain. The serenity that comes from closing your eyes and listening to the trickle can't be described in words.
Two bodies of water, the Moshassuck River and Manton Reservoir, are widely regarded as the main points of interest along the trail. It isn't hard to see why -- with lush greenery surrounding a deep blue oasis, views like this are simply picture-perfect.
This trail -- and the entire 130-acre Lime Rock Preserve, in fact -- is perfect for observing the change of seasons. When autumn rolls around, the trees show off their brightest hues for a spectacle that promises to leave you awestruck. Feel the leaves crunch beneath your feet as images of cozy sweaters and steamy mugs of hot cocoa fill your mind.
Once winter arrives, the trail is a snowy wonderland. How many different animal footprints can you spot?
