We don't mean to brag (or maybe we do), but Rhode Island's parks are second to none. Whether you're into peaceful ponds, waterfalls, or forested hikes, the Ocean State has a surprisingly diverse landscape. But no park is quite as fairytale-like as Roger Williams Park, which has been charming New Englanders since the 1870s.
Roger Williams Park is located in Providence, and it's one of the top attractions in our capital city.
Many longtime Rhode Islanders have memories here that span multiple generations.
The park was first created in the early 1870s, after Betsey Williams bequeathed 102 acres of farmland and woodland to the city of Providence to be used for public purpose.
The park is named after her great-great grandfather, Roger Williams.
The park spans over 435 beautiful acres, with an abundance of outdoor recreation and educational opportunities.
The park largely consists of some stunning botanic gardens, making the space look positively enchanting.
In its beginnings, this space was created to serve as an escape for those working in Providence, which was highly industrialized for its time.
These days, it's a space for students to learn, children to play, and families to make memories. On a typical year, the park will get over 1.5 million visits from locals and tourists alike.
One of the top attractions at the park is the Roger Williams Park Zoo, which is home to over 150 animals from around the world.
The zoo is one of the oldest in the entire nation -- it first opened in 1872.
Another favorite spot is the vintage Carousel Park.
The carousel has been closed due to current conditions, but it's set to re-open later this summer.
Roger Williams Park is owned by the City of Providence, while the zoo is managed by the Rhode Island Zoological Society.
It's easy to see why this place is nicknamed The People's Park -- it's a great representation of Rhode Island’s rich and diverse history.
The People's Park is open daily from 7 a.m. - 9 p.m., and it's free to enjoy.
Even though some of the park's attractions have been closed, this is still an incredibly beautiful place to come and enjoy nature.
When was the last time you spent some quality time at this beautiful park?
