Life in Rhode Island is beautiful. But considering it's also the smallest state in the country, it's safe to assume that once you've lived here for a while, you've pretty much seen it all. But that's never true... there's always a new park, beach, or trail to discover. And when you find the Neutaconkanut Hill Park Loop trail, you'll see glimpses of Rhody in a whole new way.
The Neutaconkanut Hill Park Loop is located at Neutaconkanut Hill Park.
The 88-acre recreation area is a hidden gem, despite the fact that it's located in Providence, our largest city.
This park provides plenty of virtually untouched space to serve as a safe home for the flora and fauna of Rhode Island.
The lush woodland features ravines, freshwater springs, and several walking trails created in the 1930s by the WPA.
The Neutaconkanut Hill Park Loop is about 1.7 miles in length, and it's considered a great, easy hike for all skill levels.
Families love this trail, and dogs are also welcome as long as they stay on their leashes.
This hill actually has quite a history. It was the northwest boundary of the land agreement between Roger Williams, the founder of Rhode Island, and the Narragansett people.
Eventually the property was purchased by the Borden family, followed by the King family (until 1892). A family monument still stands on the property, and you'll see plenty of tidbits from the past on the trail.
But as interesting as the local history of this place is, it's the views that keep people coming back for more...
... and they are well worth seeing.
Stop and take in the views of the downtown Providence skyline and Narragansett Bay. They're visible from several different parts of the loop.
The Neutaconkanut Hill Park Loop is a pleasant hike through one of Rhode Island's best off-the-beaten-path parks.
And while this area is beautiful in any season, we highly recommend enjoying the fall foliage here.
