When people visit our great state for the first time and are searching for some bucket-list-worthy hiking trails, some routes quickly come to mind like the Cliff Walk and even the trek to Stepstone Falls. But tucked away in the Norman Bird Sanctuary is another hiking trail in Rhode Island that is truly iconic — the Hanging Rock Trail. This path is not too long, family-friendly, and takes you to one of our favorite overlooks in Rhode Island. It’s one hiking trail that everyone should hike at least once in their lifetime.
The Norman Bird Sanctuary is located in the charming town of Middletown and is comprised of a bird sanctuary, nature preserve, museum, and environmental education center. It is the type of place where you can easily spend an afternoon outdoors, surrounded by some of Mother Nature’s greatest creations. The sanctuary hosts dozens of annual events, and there are several miles of hiking trails, including the Hanging Rock Trail.
This iconic hiking trail in Rhode Island is located on the eastern edge of the sanctuary’s three ridges. The Hanging Rock Trail is 1.9 miles long and quite easy. There is some elevation gain on this hike, but you'll find plenty of places to stop and take a break.

Most of your journey will be fairly flat, and the trail will be quite easy to follow. You don’t have to worry about losing this trail. Just be aware that there are some wooden stairs you will need to conquer and a few rocks to climb over, making this trail a little more challenging for small feet.
While your entire journey is going to be beautiful as you walk through trees, past unique rock formations, and to gorgeous viewpoints, nothing quite prepares you for the view at the end of your journey. From the top, you’ll be able to see the ocean, Gardiner Pond, Sakonnet River, and so much more. It’s pretty remarkable.
Due to the inclines, you’ll definitely want proper footwear, plenty of water, and even a few snacks for your journey. I also recommend bringing along a great camera so you don’t forget the views. Keep in mind that because this trail is in the Norman Bird Sanctuary, there is a small fee to access the trail.
With the easy-to-follow route, short distance, and enchanting views, there is so much to love about the Hanging Rock Trail in Rhode Island. It is a wonderful afternoon adventure that your entire family will enjoy.
