For such a small state, Rhode Island's sure hiding a lot of natural gems, isn't it? Well, that's just part of what makes living here so amazing. Just when we think we've seen it all, we discover something new to us. Whether you've been to this wildlife sanctuary in Bradford, Rhode Island, or not, you'll probably want to add it to your must-visit list. It promises plenty of natural beauty and a bit of quiet in an otherwise busy world.
Before you begin exploring the nearly 544-acre Grills Preserve in Hopkinton, look at the posted map to get a feel for the area's layout. You'll probably want to snap a photo, too.
While some hikers assert the trails, the best way to explore this natural area, are well-marked, the map offers assistance if you lose your way or decide to change course.
More than four miles of trails meander through Grills Preserve and will take you past such natural beauty as an upland forest, freshwater wetlands, and...
A lagoon. Part of the preserve also sits along the Pawtucket River. If you're not in the mood to follow a trail, cast a line for a bit of catch-and-release fishing.
You'll also pass the Stone Cairn, an eight-foot-tall monument that pays homage to the Flood of 2010. It was built at eight feet to match the height of the tallest flood waters.

Take some time to pause at the tiny historic cemetery, home to just 15 graves.
If you don't have a lot of time, follow the 1.3-mile Gardiner-Green Lot Loop Trail. You'll only need about a half hour to stroll along the path that passes the cemetery and fields and through a forested area.
You'll be treated to some beautiful views at Grills Preserve, so bring your camera.
The trails, including the 4.5-mile Grills Preserve, are kid-friendly and popular with hikers, bikers, and horseback riders. Leashed dogs are permitted on the trails.
