Fort Wetherill has a long military history, in its heyday, it was the largest fort of the Coast Defenses of Narragansett Bay. Abandoned after WWII and turned over to the state of Rhode Island, it has been reclaimed by nature in places and taken over by something quite captivating in others.
The abandoned fort sits within Fort Wetherill State Park on the south part of the eastern tip of Conanicut Island in Jamestown. The 61-acre park is known best for its granite cliffs and stunning views.
Visiting the abandoned fort is slightly eerie. Harsh concrete structures and metal railings are a stark contrast to the surrounding landscape.
There are signs posted warning visitors of dangerous spots, but some don't heed the warnings.
Pass through entryways where soldiers once walked and that have stood the test of time.
Descend staircases that have begun to crumble in places.
Inside the walls of this abandoned fort is the artistry of those who enjoy creating graffiti.
Just like the exterior walls, the inside has become a canvas for brightly colored expressions.
Some call it street art and some call it vandalism, but it is quite captivating nonetheless.
