September is here and while we still have a little bit of summer left, before you know it autumn will arrive. Crisp cool nights, apple picking, and leaf peeping are just some of the things we can look forward to this season. You'll be excited to hear that the fall foliage predictions for Rhode Island are bright and bold. The leaves are forecast to display their colors in full force, so dust off your camera and get ready for the show.
According to the New England Network, there are quite a few factors that influence how bright the fall colors will shine this year. Some of these things have already played out earlier this year and some elements in the next few weeks will influence the foliage display.
Early cool temperatures this spring kept the leaves from showing themselves longer than usual. Many trees were leafless until May. This might seem like bad news for leaf peepers but when the foliage came in, it showed up strong.
Low amounts of precipitation in early summer also might seem like bad news. Yet, the low amount of rain kept the leaf-eating fungus at bay.
While the summer has been hot and humid, regular thunderstorms have kept the trees watered. As a result, the leaves are healthy. So what does all of this mean for the fall foliage predictions?
The upcoming autumn display of leaves should be spectacular. When the leaves start to turn the colors will be dazzling. Plenty of golds, oranges, and reds will create a beautiful palette of color.
The most vibrant foliage colors will appear if early autumn has cool nighttime temperatures, plenty of sunshine, and no excessive periods of rain. The colors are more affected by precipitation and cloudy skies than they are by temperature.
When considering the past weather of the year, healthiness of the leaves, and the future predictions for early autumn weather, this leaf-peeping season should exceed your expectations.
The leaves may start to change their colors a bit later than usual especially in the northern part of Rhode Island. But once the season starts, look forward to an incredible landscape of bold color.
