If you're searching for the best clams, you need to head to a place that has tried-and-true recipes that have stood the test of time. Since 1920, Aunt Carrie's Restaurant in Rhode Island has been dishing up clam cakes and chowder to hungry diners.
The locals loved her cooking and now generations later, the coastal eatery still has an enormous following of loyal customers. Over the decades, accolades and awards have rained down on this timeless restaurant simply because it's that darn delicious.
Aunt Carrie's actually had its humble beginnings on the beach in Narragansett. Carrie Walker and her family would sell lemonade to fisherman and other campers as their own group enjoyed the beach. As Carrie began cooking up chowder and fritters, those also were sold before the restaurant was even built.
The restaurant was built in 1920 and was much smaller than it is today. As business grew, the need for more space created additions to the original restaurant. Today, the 4th generation of the family runs the restaurant using the same scrumptious recipes as Carrie did.
Dive into a golden-brown plate of clam cakes. Perfectly fried with just the right amount of clams, this dish has been on the menu since the restaurant first opened nearly a century ago.
Delicious clam chowders come in the true South County style with a thin flavorful broth. Choose between plain, milk, or tomato chowders overloaded with clams.
The clam choices don't end with chowder and cakes. Enjoy a generous plate of fresh steamers with a side of melted butter. Add a cup of chowder for just 99 cents. Now that's a no-brainer.
Dig into a yummy order of fried whole-belly clams. These are a crispy and satisfying treat when you're at the beach. Aunt Carrie's also serves fried clam strips and fried clam rolls. At this restaurant, all of your clam cravings are covered.
