If you want some beautiful views and feel miles away from it all, while all the while being just across the river from downtown, Sellwood Riverfront Park is the place to escape to. This lovely park features a beach, walking paths and plenty of space to people watch.
Located at SE Spokane Street at Oaks Park Way, the park is right down the street from Oaks Park and a fun adventure to combine with a day at the amusement park.
The view from the beach is incredible. Because you are right on the water, it is also prime ground for watching sailboats, kayakers, and jet boats navigating the river.
The sand on the beach is pretty lovely too. On summer days it gets pretty crowded here, but now that summer is fading, things are calmer and less crowded.
It is a great place to view some changing of the colors in another month when the shoreline becomes a mix of oranges, yellows and reds. You will also get a glimpse of many floating houses on the Willamette.
Or go for a swim if the weather stays warm. Be sure to bring a blanket to sit on and some towels if you plan on going in.
The beach is especially popular with dogs and their owners. There is a large off-leash dog area, but with no fencing, it is best for dogs that stay near you.
For a relaxing day on the beach, this is the place to hang out. The native wetland on the north end of the park is worth exploring for a chance to see frogs and dragonflies flutter about.
During the height of summer, Sellwood Riverfront Park is a wonderful place to see a concert, as part of Portland Parks and Recreation summer series. But now, as kids are back in school, it may be one of the best and more peaceful times to visit the park. Especially in this next month when the weather is still warm.
