If you haven't been to the Oregon Zoo lately, plan a visit today. The elephant lands, completed at the end of 2015, are wonderful, and allow you to get an up-close look at the amazing Asian elephants that call the zoo home. With over 6 acres of space to roam, it may take a bit of time to locate the herd, but once you do, you are in for a treat.
One of the focal points of the new lands is the water pool, loaded with 160,000 gallons of water.
Seeing elephants swimming is perhaps the one activity that is sure to bring smiles to everyone's faces.
Following the zoo's philosophy that animals should have control over how they spend their days, the exhibit aims to encourage activity for 14 to 16 hours a day, as would be natural for them in their native environment.
Watching the elephants eat from feeding stations can be a real treat and can show you just how intelligent elephants are with their problem solving abilities.
Most of all though, the expansive exhibit which contains indoor and outdoor areas, allows the elephants to move freely do what they want to do when they want to do it.
Asian elephants range from 6,000 to 13,000 pounds, making them one of the largest mammals. The 5-elephant herd sticks together and has a strong bond with one another, which can be seen in just a short visit to the exhibit.
Watching the elephants' curiosity, playfulness, and adventure is just one of the many great things to see at the Oregon Zoo.
