Three cheers for summer! Sure, the heat, humidity, and stickiness can be a bit frustrating. But, let's face it, summer will be over before we know it. Take advantage of every golden moment of the season by spending as much time as you can outdoors. And, when you're outdoors, explore the Burgh (and a bit beyond) by embarking on these gorgeous waterfront trails around Pittsburgh that will give you a new appreciation for nature and the easy access we have to the water.
1. Steel Valley Trail
Drink in all the picture perfect sights along the Steel Valley Trail, which meanders for nearly nine miles from Homestead to Clairton. Your hike along the river, which promises spectacular snapshots, will lead you past such historic markers as the site of the Carrie Furnaces, the U.S. Steel Edgar Thompson Plant, and the site of the Battle of Homestead. Carve out some time to tour the Carrie Furnaces, too.
2. North Shore Trail
Simply sensational views of the Pittsburgh skyline await along the North Shore Trial, which spans six miles from Millvale to the North Shore. Of course, you'll follow the river along the relatively easy hike that begins at Millvale's Riverfront Park. Along the way, you'll pass such landmarks as the Three Sisters Bridges, PNC Park, and the Carnegie Science Center. And, you might just want to stop for a dip in refreshing water steps.
3. Slippery Rock Gorge Trail
Fair warning: The Slippery Rock Gorge Trail will take you outside of Pittsburgh, to McConnells Mill State Park. And, although it's a spectacularly beautiful hike, it is quite challenging so make sure you're up to the challenge. The 6.2 mile hike winds from Hells Hollow to Eckerts Bridge, offering beautiful water views along the way. But, that's just the beginning. You'll also pass a picture-perfect waterfall, a cave, an abandoned coal mine, and a natural bridge.
4. The Kildoo Trail
Prefer an easier hike? Hit the Kildoo Trail, also in McConnells Mill State Park, that traverses three picturesque miles. Start and end your hike along the Kildoo Loop Trail at either end of the covered bridge, an ideal spot for picture taking. The trail, which does feature some rocky terrain, will lead you past a waterfall, rock formations, and the Old Grist Mill. If you have time, stop to explore the Old Grist Mill, too.
5. Lakeside Loop
Pack a picnic lunch for before or after your hike along the Lakeside Loop at Keystone State Park. Rated as one of the easiest trails in the sprawling park, the Lakeside Loop is predominately flat and meanders 2.2 miles around Keystone Lake. Admire the shimmering water of the lake, and keep an eye out for local wildlife.
6. Beach Trail/Lake Trail
Journey to Raccoon Creek State Park, where you'll have your choice of spectacular waterfront trails on which to hike. Looking for short but sweet? Head out on the Beach Trail. At less than half of a mile, you'll trek from the sandy beach along Raccoon Lake to the campgrounds. Or, challenge yourself with the moderately rated, two mile Lake Trial that culminates at Raccoon Lake.
