Embrace the dog days of summer with an escape to this hidden beach near Pittsburgh where you can lie your beach towel on the soft sand and nap in between dips in the cool lake water. Raccoon Creek State Park's beach, a little over 30 miles from downtown Pittsburgh, may not be your typical coastline beach but it's a tiny slice of paradise nonetheless.
Pack your beach towel when you head to Raccoon Creek State Park in Hookstown, a little over 30 miles from downtown Pittsburgh, where you'll discover 500 feet of beautiful sand along Raccoon Lake.
Get to the beach early for a perfect spot on the edge of the lake or, if you prefer a little more privacy, drop your beach towel or beach chair on the lush green grass. Beach hours run from 8 a.m. until sunset each day. The beach does not have lifeguards, so swim at your own risk.
Bring a picnic lunch or head to the concession stand just by the beach where you'll have plenty of treats from which to choose, including ice cream goodies and drinks.
A trip to the beach allows for plenty of relaxation but you're in the perfect place if you'd also like to do a little exploring. Raccoon Creek State Park spans 7,572 acres and offers a plethora of fun activities, including biking, horseback riding, and camping.
Hit one of the trails that cover approximately 44 miles in the state park. Trek the easy 1.2 mile Mineral Springs Loop for a chance to see the quaint waterfall. If you prefer a challenge, however, opt for the nearly 10 mile Heritage Trail that guides hikers with blue blazes.
Pack your fishing gear. Raccoon Creek Lake stocks numerous fish, including bass, walleye, sunfish, bluegill, rainbow trout, brown trout, and crappie. Traverse Creek, not far from the park's office, features fishing specifically for youngsters 12 and under.
Rent a hydrobike, a kayak, a canoe, or a rowboat to enjoy a different view of Raccoon Lake.
Keep an eye out for the residents of Raccoon State Park – raccoons, rabbits, and deer, to name just a few.
End the day by watching the sun start to sink behind the towering trees protecting Raccoon Lake before stopping by the bathhouse for a quick shower and to change.
While Raccoon Creek State Park is open year-round, the beach is only open from around Memorial Day weekend to the middle of September. The beach is ADA-accessible.
