Many decades ago, a groom and his bride are said to have rushed up the mountain, heading to the Wopsononock Hotel to celebrate their new marriage. Unfortunately, their happy day was marred by the bride’s father, who vehemently opposed the union.

As the two fled up the hill and away from her father, the carriage in which they were riding came to a dangerous curve, now known as Devil’s Elbow, and toppled over the side of the mountain.

The newlyweds fell to their deaths. Searchers quickly found the bride’s body but the groom’s body mysteriously vanished and was never found.

Ever since that tragic night, travelers trekking up the side of the mountain tell of seeing the apparition of a distraught bride carrying a lantern and desperately searching for her husband. Some even say that the woman stops cars just to see if her husband is inside.

Still others – typically young men – claim to have picked up a woman hitchhiking up the side of the mountain. These young men describe being unable to see the woman in white in the rear-view mirror even though they could see her when they turned and looked in the backseat.

As the car in which she's traveling approaches Devil’s Elbow, "The White Lady of Wopsononock" simply vanishes.
