Mmm...mmm...can anything really compare to that first bite into a fresh strawberry? Or, a freshly-baked blueberry pie? Summer's the season of the freshest fruit and there's no shortage of it around the Burgh. Bite down into some of the area's freshest fruit this summer while savoring every sweet bite. But, first head to these six pick-your-own fruit farms in Pittsburgh and the surrounding area to load up on the freshest fruits of the season.
1. Triple B Farms
Are you looking for where to buy local strawberries? Well, head on over to Triple B Farms. The proprietors grow some of the most amazing strawberries, as well as oh-so-delicious raspberries in season. But the sprawling farm offers more than just fruit picking. Kids can play in Pop’s Farmyard and visit the resident goats, chickens, and other animals. They also offer hay rides and have a totally fun pumpkin path in the fall. There is also lots of cool stuff to buy in the farm market. Triple B Farms is located at 823 Berry Ln., Monongahela, PA 15063.
2. Trax Farms
Trax Farms, one of the most popular fruit farms in the state, beckons visitors all year round with its farm market and antique store. Summer means strawberry and blueberry picking. Strawberry-picking season is up first, beginning in June while blueberry season follows in July. Then, of course, October’s all about hayrides and picking pumpkins on the farm. 3. Soergel Orchards
Nothing quite compares to a fun day on the farm. Soergel Orchards promises a day of adventure with its farm market, bakery, ice cream shop, and gift shop. And, of course, you can pick your own fruit in season. The farm welcomes visitors to pick from a variety of fruits and vegetables, including asparagus, blueberries, corn, raspberries, and pumpkins. 4. Simmons Farm
Head to Simmons Farm to pick your own strawberries, peaches, apples, and flowers. The season kicks off in the late spring with pick-your-own strawberries. It is definitely one of the best pick-your-own fruit farms in the state. Of course, the farm also hosts a variety of events throughout the year including Easter and Halloween festivities. Simmons Farm is located at 170 Simmons Rd., McMurray, PA 15317.
5. Norman’s Orchards
Editor’s Note: Norman Orchards is temporarily closed, so be sure to call or check their website to make sure it’s open before visiting.
Norman Orchard’s fruit season usually kicks off in early June. Visitors are welcome to pick their own fruit straight from the vine or to purchase freshly picked fruit from the farm market. In June, you can pick cherries or blueberries. July follows with peaches and more blueberries. Norman’s Orchards is located at 2318 Butler Logan Rd., Tarentum, PA 15084.
6. Morris Organic Farm
Morris Organic Farm in Irwin customarily kicks off its season in June and promises plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables throughout the summer. Fruits and vegetables grown on the farm include a variety of beans, lettuce, potatoes, corn, and strawberries. Stop by Morris Organic Farm at 110 Slebodnik Rd., Irwin, PA 15642.
