It's probably fair to say that most Pittsburghers have visited Laurel Caverns at least once. If we haven't explored the deepest cave in Pennsylvania, we've certainly heard about it. However, if you're willing to drive just a bit further, you can explore another cave near Pittsburgh that's an ideal day trip destination.
Go underground to explore Lincoln Caverns in Huntingdon, just over two hours from downtown Pittsburgh. An ideal destination for a day trip, Lincoln Caverns...
...welcomes guests to tour it and Whisper Rocks on a one-hour tour. The tour, in fact, offers an intimate look at the two crystal caves that were first discovered in the early 1930s.
Before you set off on your tour, make sure you dress comfortably for the year-round cave temperature of 52 degrees Fahrenheit. Wear comfy shoes, too. Management suggests shoes with rubber soles.
Unlike some attractions, cameras and video cameras are both allowed in the two caves that feature such natural features as...
...gigantic flowstones, cave formations, and crystals. After your tour of Lincoln and Whisper Caverns, keep the fun going.
Go gem mining at the caverns, and embark on one of the picturesque nature trails. The trails around the caves boast a large assortment of wildlife — from rabbits to deer.
Consider bringing lunch, too, then spread out at one of the pavilions for a leisurely picnic. Lincoln Caverns also has a gift shop, where you can pick up souvenirs.
