Sprawling suburbs flank the city of Pittsburgh and, if you drive a little further outside of the city, you'll discover lush green farmland and country homes that dot the landscape. Nestled in Greensburg, about 45 minutes to an hour from downtown Pittsburgh, lies Twin Lakes Park, an incredible park and a popular destination for Pittsburghers who just want to get away from it all for the day.
Twin Lakes Park promises something for everyone: Those looking for a quiet place to relax and to unwind; joggers and hikers interested in exploring shaded trails; fishermen who want to catch game fish either in the summer or in the winter; and boaters who want to explore the Upper and the Lower lakes. And, that's really just the beginning of all that this incredible park has to offer.
The Twin Lakes are undoubtedly the masterpiece of the 467 acre public park. Visit the park on Sunday evenings during the summer and take in a free concert on the Island Stage at the Lower Lake.
Stop by the boathouse where you can purchase bait if you plan to fish. You can also buy drinks to cool you down, a snack, or a quick meal.
Stroll leisurely down stone paths and, if you're up for it, rent a paddle boat for a relaxing ride around the lake.
Spend time along the water but don't forget to check out everything else Twin Lakes Park has to offer – the public skate park (available 9 a.m. to dusk), a dog park, hunting (where permitted), and cross country skiing in the winter.
Perhaps the most poignant place in the park is the must-visit Vietnam War Memorial. The Upper Lake, in fact, features Reflection Island, a peaceful and respected spot where visitors can remember their lost loved ones.
Twin Lakes Park attracts visitors all year around. Autumn promises spectacular fall foliage while ice fishing and cross country skiing are popular in the winter months.
The Westmoreland Arts & Heritage Festival takes over Twin Lakes for several days every June, attracting visitors from all over with its many family-friendly events, activities, and attractions, including The Artist Market, a prestigious juried art competition, war reenactments, concerts, theater performances, children's activities, and a delicious variety of food.
Twin Lakes Park opens daily at 9 a.m. and closes at dusk, although you should have little trouble getting some spectacular shots of the setting sun before you say goodbye to this incredible park in Greensburg.
