Pennsylvania boasts an impressive network of hiking trails - rated easy to difficult - that make exploring the state so much easier and so much more exciting. This tunnel trail in Pennsylvania, for example, will lead you on an unforgettable journey along the Allegheny River.
Slip on your hiking boots - or your comfiest shoes should suffice - for your journey along the 28.2 mile Allegheny River Trail.
Following an old railroad grade, the Allegheny River Trail promises a predominately flat hike on asphalt.
So, decide whether you want to trek some or all of the trail that spans from Emlenton to Franklin.
Stop along the way to admire the fields of flowers. And, read about the history of the area on the historical markers.
Learn, for example, about the two railroad tunnels you'll travel through on the Allegheny River Trail. The Kennderdell Tunnel spans 3,350 feet while the Rockland Tunnel stretches 2,868 feet.
But, make sure you bring a flashlight along for your journey through the tunnels. Both are very dark.
Of course, you'll also pass other historical remnants along the river trail, including the remains of Joseph P. Sibley's farm and mansion.
