History whispers throughout Ridley Creek State Park, just outside of Philadelphia. The sprawling 2,606 acre park is home to a living history plantation, to abandoned and ruins of centuries old buildings, and to picturesque hiking trails. Step back through the pages of history when you embark on this awesome hike in Pennsylvania.
Explore the rich history of Ridley Creek State Park along one of the six hiking trails that span 13 miles.
The land on which Ridley Creek State Park sits was once owned by Walter Jeffords, a local horse breeder, who purchased the property in the early 1900's. The Jeffords built a mansion on the property that also housed a village from the 18th century.
For close up views of abandoned and ruins of stone farm buildings, set out on the Blue Trail that covers just over 3.5 miles.
Some of those original buildings from the 1700's, including the library and the miller's house, still house individuals today.
Wear appropriate shoes for the hike along the dirt path, which becomes carpeted with rustic leaves during the autumn months.
The moderately difficult trail includes some hills, passes through lush wooded areas, and features a bathroom at around the halfway point.
Follow the signs for the Blue Trail as several of the trails intersect at various points.
Discover some of Ridley Creek State Park's history as you pass abandoned and the ruins of stone buildings along the Blue Trail. But, don't stop there.
The park also features the Colonial Pennsylvania Plantation, a working farm for more than three centuries.
Join a guided tour, for a fee, that will give you a firsthand view of such 18th century chores as caring for the crops, preserving food, and cooking over a hearth.
Ridley Creek State Park welcomes visitors all year long from sunrise to sunset.
