Most of us will probably admit that, even if we just don’t like it, snow is absolutely beautiful, transforming neighborhoods into winter wonderlands. Think of that brief span of time when the fresh snow glistens on the ground before it’s trampled with footprints. Breathtaking, right? If you’ve never been to Pennsylvania’s Grand Canyon during the winter, you might want to plan a visit after a fresh snowfall.
Pine Creek Gorge, commonly known as the Grand Canyon of Pennsylvania, promises sensational views all year round, making it one of those destinations you really have to visit more than once.
It's one of the most beautiful places in Pennsylvania and a must-add to any Pennsylvanian's bucket list.
Nestled near the enchanting town of Wellsboro, Pine Creek Gorge beckons countless visitors from around the country. They view the natural wonder from either Leonard Harrison State Park or Colton Point State Park.
If you’ve never seen Pine Creek Gorge in person, you’re in for a real treat. The natural wonder stretches near 50 miles and is more than 1,000 feet deep.
View the Grand Canyon of PA from scenic overlooks in both parks. Or, if you’re up for an adventure, set off on a hiking trail. (Remember to dress for the weather and to wear sturdy hiking boots, especially if you’re visiting after a snowfall.)
Seasoned hikers might want to travel along the two-mile loop Turkey Path Trail at Leonard Harrison State Park, which will take you to the bottom of the canyon and back. The challenging trail features scenic overlooks, stairs, and waterfalls.
If you plan on following Turkey Path Creek, make sure you prepare. Wear sturdy boots, and dress for the weather. Be sure to let someone know where you're going to, just in case there's an emergency.
Colton Point State Park’s one-mile Rim Trail offers an easy hike paired with sensational views. The relatively short hike is predominately flat and boasts several scenic overlooks.
This is one of those adventures where you definitely want to bring your camera or smartphone. The opportunity for awe-inspiring photos is endless.
Both parks are open all year round from dawn to dusk.
