With so many natural wonders, from the Grand Canyon of Pennsylvania (Pine Creek Gorge) to stunning waterfalls, Pennsylvania is an adventurer's dream come true. One of the things that makes Pennsylvania stand out, though, is there are so many natural wonders that are easily accessible. If we can't or don't want to embark on a long or challenging hike, we can still enjoy some of the most magnificent beauty - like this natural wonder in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania.
Nestled within Pinchot State Forest in Wilkes-Barre, Seven Tubs Recreation Area is home to one of the most breathtaking natural wonders in Pennsylvania, and it's easily accessible by a short trail.
When you arrive at the recreation area, you'll come to a parking lot, the only place you can legally park. Parking on the entrance road is prohibited.
The recreation area can get quite busy so if the parking lot is full, you might want to explore another part of the forest and return later in the day.
Two trails will lead you to the natural wonder known as the Seven Tubs, a series of several potholes that were formed by glacial meltwater tens of thousands of years ago.
The glacial meltwater created tubs, some with cascades and natural waterslides, which you can view along one of two trails - the .30-mile Seven Tubs Loop Trail and the 1.8-mile Audubon Loop Trail.
If you don't have a lot of time or prefer a short and sweet adventure, follow the Seven Tubs Loop Trail. It's just a short walk from the parking lot, but it has a few challenges, including tree roots jutting up from the ground and rocky terrain.
The longer Audubon Trail wanders past the tubs and along Laurel Run. Keep an eye out for tiny waterfalls, colorful wildflowers in the warmer months, and local wildlife.
Make sure you're aware of the rules of the Seven Tubs Recreation Area. Biking and horseback riding on the trails are prohibited; dogs are welcome but must be on a leash, and loud music is not allowed.
The tubs and natural waterslides are popular for cooling off in the summer, although it's not encouraged. Jumping and diving from the rocks is prohibited.
If you've got time, bring a picnic along. You'll find several picnic tables in the Seven Tubs Recreation Area.
While individual picnicking is permitted, group picnics are not allowed.
