Most people probably think of one place, Pine Creek Gorge, when they hear Grand Canyon in Pennsylvania. That’s because that natural wonder is known as the Grand Canyon of Pennsylvania. However, there’s another gorge that fits that title, too. Nay Aug Gorge, a unique natural wonder in Scranton, Pennsylvania, could also easily be a miniature Grand Canyon.
The largest park in Scranton, Nay Aug Park spans 73 acres and draws visitors for its many amenities – from a hiking trail and a swimming pool to a treehouse and a waterfall.
Tucked within the Scranton park is a hidden gem. Nay Aug Gorge sits along the park’s lone scenic path, the Davis Trail. The gorge formed more than 11,500 years ago during the Ice Age.
Today, it’s a natural wonder in Pennsylvania that’s a must-add to your bucket list. To see it from several vantage points, follow the two-mile Davis Trail, a kid and dog-friendly path.
Before heading out, be aware that while it might look tempting, swimming, boating, and fishing are all illegal in Nay Aug Gorge.
The water is extremely cold and dangerous with fast-flowing rapids. Since 1890, an estimated 40 people have died in the gorge, so heed the warnings and follow the law when you visit, no matter how tempting the water looks.
The picturesque path will lead you to several stunning wonders, including a treehouse, which boasts spectacular views of the Pennsylvania gorge.
Cascading down 20 feet, Nay Aug Falls tumbles into the gorge. You’ll only have to walk about a quarter of a mile before arriving at the overlook of the Pennsylvania waterfall.
