Stumbling across a hidden gem is like hitting the lottery or discovering a juicy secret. We want to share it with the world, but then...it won't be so hidden anymore. Even those of us who have heard of this hidden gem lake in Wellsboro, Pennsylvania, may not realize it's a prime fishing destination and well worth a visit in any season even if you don't plan to cast a line.
Hills Creek State Park in Wellsboro may go unnoticed sometimes, through no fault of its own, though. This beautiful 407-acre park sits just 20 minutes from the Grand Canyon of Pennsylvania (Pine Creek Gorge), one of the state's most majestic natural wonders.
Those who are in the know, however, come to this cozy state park for the quiet it typically promises. It's also home to some of the best fishing in Pennsylvania.
Spanning 137 acres, the warm-water Hills Creek Lake is home to several fish species, including largemouth bass, walleye, carp, bluegill, and crappie.
If you're looking to break a record, you'll have to hook a largemouth bass that weighs in at more than eight pounds (that's around the size of the current record holder).
An ADA-accessible pier is available at Pines Boat Launch, where you can cast a line and enjoy a bit of quiet.
Fishing in Hills Creek Lake doesn't stop when the weather gets cold either. Ice fishing is popular during the winter.
Be sure to take precautions if you go ice fishing by wearing a life jacket and making sure the ice is thick enough to venture onto; ice thickness is not monitored. Find a list of ice fishing tips on the official website of the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources.
Even if you're not into fishing, you'll still find plenty to do at Hills Creek State Park. Soak up the sun on the sandy beach, and cool off in Hills Creek Lake during the summer.
The beach also has a seasonal snack bar, which sells summer's goodies and fish bait. Grab a bite or bring a picnic, and enjoy a meal at a picnic table.
Boating, hiking, and camping are also popular at this cozy state park.
