Sensational views really aren't that difficult to find, especially in a state as breathtaking as Pennsylvania. However, sometimes those views require a bit of effort on our part. A challenge definitely awaits when you follow the Flat Rock Loop Trail in Pennsylvania, although you'll be well rewarded in the end with jaw-dropping views of the Cumberland Valley.
Wandering 4.8 miles through Colonel Denning State Park in Newville, Flat Rock Loop Trail has earned a difficult rating from the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (DCNR).
However, some experienced hikers assert that it's more on the moderate side. You'll really have to decide for yourself, though.
The trail will take you along, at points, a picturesque boardwalk and past an abundance of natural beauty, including wildflowers.
Be sure you're wearing comfortable, sturdy shoes, because you're going to deal with some rocky, difficult terrain as you make your way up Blue Mountain. Keep an eye out for loose rocks, too.
While it's not a terribly long trail, it does require quite a bit of physical effort. Consider bringing both food and drink along to keep you well-hydrated and energized.
Bugs, including gnats and mosquitoes, can be quite a nuisance on the trail, so you'll probably want to carry some bug spray.
Despite the fact that so much of the trail is a straight uphill climb, it can get really crowded, so prepare to pass other hikers along the way.
The natural outcrop Flat Rock will greet you when you arrive at the top of Blue Mountain. Sit down; marvel at the striking views, and snap photos.
Before you set off, you'll probably want to make sure it's a clear day, so you can enjoy those jaw-dropping views. The trail's also particularly popular during the fall foliage and after a snowfall during the winter.
