Mother Nature’s certainly been a tease this winter. Remember the winter day not too long ago where the temps hit 80 degrees? On went the shorts and flip flops. Down went the windows. And, some even turned on the A/C. (After all, we’re not used to 80 degrees in February.) Spring is definitely on its way. Here are 10 things every Pittsburgher routinely does at the first sign of spring.
Okay, well, some of us wear flip flops all year around. But, that first sign of spring usually means ditching the boots and closed-toed shoes of winter in favor of flip flops or sandals.
Yep. Plenty of yinzers wears shorts even when it’s freezing with snow on the ground. However, most of us wear shorts as soon as the temperature breaks 50, maybe 55 degrees. At what temps do you break out the shorts?
Same as the clothes. Too bulky. Some of us wear a light jacket when those first signs of spring appear. And, some of us simply forgo a jacket, a sweatshirt, or anything that reminds us of winter.
Ahhh…what could possibly be better than fresh air streaming through the house through all the open windows? And, of course, we also get to hear the songs of the birds, back after a long, quiet winter.
Those signs of spring get us in the mood to start planning our gardens. What will we grow? Where will we grow it? Some of us even start planting indoors in anticipation of the consistently warmer days ahead.
Winter gave us plenty of time indoors. Now it’s time to get outside. Go for a walk. Hike. Take the kids to the playground. Have a picnic. The possibilities really are endless.

Yeah, yeah, we know. Just because spring is almost here doesn’t mean the cold weather is done with us. We get it. And, maybe we jokingly blame the local meteorologists for getting our hopes up that the snow and cold is just about gone for good – at least until next winter.

Why We Love It: It's taken several trips for me to figure out my perfect "weekender bag that's TSA approved," but I've found my perfect carry on with the TOBIQ Colorado 30L. Why I Love It: Fact: Airplanes are notoriously dry, dry, dry. No matter how much water I drink both before and during the flight, I always find myself in a hydration deficit for days. Pittsburgh’s certainly been feeling that bitter cold of winter lately. Are you ready for it? Or, would you rather hibernate until spring? Whether you feel excitement or dread for the impending winter days, take heed. You have plenty of ways of surviving a Pittsburgh winter.
You can live without milk. You can survive for a few days without bread. But, toilet paper? Don’t even risk finding out what getting stuck in a snowstorm without toilet paper is like. Just stay stocked up – all winter long.
2. The mere mention of snow means a run on milk and bread at all the stores.
Toilet paper’s not the only thing at a premium when the local meteorologists mention the dreaded "s" word. Milk and bread flies off of the shelves, too. So, just be prepared for the elbowing and long lines that come along with stocking up on the essentials when snow’s on its way.
3. You think driving is bad the rest of the year? Just wait for the snow.
You’ve got a few kinds of winter drivers in the Burgh. Those drivers who are overly confident will drive with snow on the road as though it’s a sunny summer day. Then, there are the nervous and inexperienced drivers, going extra slow. Everyone else tends to fall somewhere in between. But, it just emphasizes the importance of staying alert during the winter.
4. Setting the alarm extra early is just a part of winter.
Rush hour stinks any time of the year. But, add some snow and ice to the mix, and you’re looking at extra time on the road just to get where you’re going. Save yourself the stress by getting up and leaving early.

5. You don’t have to count on the scrolling school delays on TV screens anymore.
Whew. Remember how annoying it was (and still is, if you watch the news) to watch the scrolling school delays for your school district on TV? If you sneeze or glance away for even a second, you might miss your school and have to wait until it rolls around again. Thankfully, schools now have text and email alerts to make your life easier.
We’re usually forewarned when it comes to nasty impending weather. But, you never know when you’ll walk out of your front door or out of work to find icy and snowy windshields.
Weather in Pittsburgh is finicky all year around. But, it can get downright crazy in the winter. You might wake up to mild temperatures, only to drive home during a snowstorm. You’ve got to learn to just go with the flow in the Burgh. That really is key to surviving a Pittsburgh winter.
