Soak up the spectacular views of downtown Pittsburgh and the three rivers on an unforgettable hike along a portion of the Three Rivers Heritage Trail. The North Shore Trail runs along six miles from Millvale to the North Shore to create what just might be the most beautiful hike in Pittsburgh.
Wear comfy shoes. Carry a water bottle. And, make sure your smartphone or camera is charged because you are about to embark on a six mile hike that offers stunning views of the city. Start your hike at the pavilion at Millvale Riverfront Park.
The North Shore Trail attracts both hikers and bikers with its relatively flat land. However, expect to deal with a variety of surfaces, including paved and dirt sections of the trail that will take you past many of Pittsburgh's most recognized and beautiful landmarks. As you make your way toward the North Shore from Millvale, you'll pass under the 31st Street Bridge (pictured above).
Prepare for unparallelled views when you cross the metal footbridge that leads to Washington Landing. Although not technically a part of the North Shore Trail, you definitely want to take the brief detour for the view alone.
The city lies before you at Washington's Landing, providing the perfect backdrop for selfies and beautiful landscape shots.
Pass various bridges, such as the 16th Street Bridge, as you hike the relatively easy North Shore Trail. Pittsburgh is the city of bridges, after all, and no hiking trail would be complete without crossing or passing under some of its famous landmarks.
As you inch closer to the North Shore, three nearly identical bridges – the Three Sisters Bridges – will come into view.
Discover intriguing artwork along the tree-lined trail.
Stroll past PNC Park. Feel the electricity emanating from Buccos' fans, if you happen to hike during a Pirates' game.
Snap photos as you hike past the water steps, the Carnegie Science Center, and Heinz Field.
End your hike with spectacular views of the river and the downtown skyline, including Point State Park.
