The Wolf Creek Trestle Hike in the Tillamook National Forest is one of Oregon's most unique hikes. Walk on an abandoned train track along the beautiful Upper Salmonberry River, past waterfalls, ponds, and rusted train cars, through railroad tunnels, and across impressive trestle bridges high above the forested canyon below.
The hike is 10 miles out-and-back, but you can turn around at any point to make it as short as you'd like. The hike is mostly flat but it's not for the faint of heart; all visitors are encouraged to be very careful since at times the footing can be slippery, unleveled, and high up in the air.
Full of beauty, history, and thrills, the Wolf Creek Trestle hike in Oregon will take you on an unforgettable adventure.
Editor's Note: As of March 2021, The Wolf Creek Trestle Trail has been closed due to safety concerns.
The adventure begins at the remote Cochran Trailhead in the Tillamook National Forest. You'll walk along a short trail past the lovely Cochran Pond before joining up with the tracks.
These train tracks used to be part of the Port of Tillamook Bay Railroad, but they became impassible back in 2007 when they were badly damaged in a large storm.
Soon, you'll come across this amazing old railway tunnel. It's very dark inside, so you're going to want to bring a flashlight or headlamp.
As you walk, you'll come across some awesome old train parts and water tanks off to the side of the tracks, slowly rusting and being reclaimed by nature.
The two impressive trestles are exhilarating and offer incredible views down into the Salmonberry River Valley. Be careful where you step. The tracks can be slippery, and the wood is getting old in parts. This may not be the best hike for someone with a fear of heights.
There are parts of the trail where the land has slid right out from under the train tracks, showing just how damaging that big storm was back in 2007. Short trails detour around the tracks before joining back up with them on solid ground.
5 miles in, you'll reach the end of the trail, where you can sit and eat lunch by the river before heading back the way you came. This awesome hike will show you both a slice of history and of beautiful wilderness. One thing is for sure: it's not an experience you'll soon forget.
