Not many people know that deep in southwest Portland is a beautiful and mysterious garden, like a real life "Secret Garden." If you're from Portland and love nature, you will understand why this is one of the most treasured gems in the city.
In 1888, Peter Kerr moved from Scotland to start a grain business. In 1916, he attained a 13-acre plot of land, in which he began creating this wonderful garden.
As he got married and started to have children, Kerr had a gigantic home built to resemble a traditional Scottish manor.
With this massive amount of land, the Kerr family made it their mission to grow some of the most impressive gardens to attract the prettiest fauna and flora.
After he passed away in 1956, the Episcopal Diocese of Oregon acquired the land, but vowed to maintain it to keep its original integrity. They named the gardens "Elk Rock Gardens of the Bishop's Close".
Now the garden is open to the public, where we are free to aimlessly roam and get lost.
Just wandering around in the serene oasis of Elk Rock Garden gives you the sense that you've been transported back to the 1700s in Scotland.
With its mysterious pathways and secret areas, you really don't know what to expect when visiting this awe-inspiring attraction in Portland.
Not to mention, it has one of the prettiest views of Mt. Hood over the Milwaukie skyline.
