Oregon is full of hidden surprises, and when you're looking for a soak in a hot spring, surrounded by beautiful forest, you'll find several options. This hidden spring has some of the bluest water in the state, and it's the perfect place to visit year-round.
Umpqua Hot Springs is a little gem tucked away in the Umpqua National Forest. This popular spot requires a short, steep hike, but it's well worth the effort.
You'll find the trailhead about three miles from the Toketee Ranger Station. Pay a $5 day use fee and park in the parking lot.
The trail is just a half mile long, but it does get steep. Though you might be tempted to wear flip flops to the hot springs, a pair of sturdy hiking shoes will serve you better on this trail.
You'll soon come to a little shelter perched on the hillside. You'll find several little pools here. You might also find people bathing in the nude, which is common at this hot spring.
The water is a beautiful azure blue, and this place truly is paradise.
On summer weekends, it can be very, very crowded here. This is one of Oregon's most popular hot springs, and everyone wants to join in the fun.
If you visit during a weekday, especially in the spring, fall, or winter, you'll find a much quieter, peaceful place. You might even be able to soak in solitude!
Many visitors note that Umpqua Hot Springs is often full of trash, cigarette butts, and broken glass. When you visit, leave the glass bottles home, and pack out your trash. There's no excuse for littering Oregon's natural beauty!
Umpqua Hot Springs is for everyone to enjoy, and it can be a wonderful place to visit, even when there are many people there. Practice the principles of Leave No Trace so that this area will be just as beautiful for generations to come.
