"Hey, we should go to that city park that used to be a volcano..." says almost no one in the world. There are extinct volcanos all over the planet, but in the United States, just six are located within the limits of a city. Oregon has two such volcanos - one in Portland; the other in Bend.
Mt. Tabor Park in Portland sits right on a volcano, and you can climb several series of staircases to the summit.
Mt. Tabor Park is Oregon's most unique park. Sitting on a volcano with a summit of 636 feet, the park offers all kinds of recreation and some gorgeous city views.
You don't see signs like this in most parks around the country!
In addition to several reservoirs, you'll find tons of staircases here, some large, some small.
The largest consists of 282 steps from bottom to top. When you tackle this beast, you'd better be ready for a workout.
It climbs up, up, up a forested hillside...
...and your thighs will be burning by the time you reach the top.
The views from the summit will temporarily make you forget that you can't breathe. You can see the city of Portland stretched out before you, and it's a pretty nice vista.
But wait - there's more! The reservoir staircase between reservoirs 5 and 6 offers another great climb.
Make your way up 131 stairs to another incredible view.
You'll also find many other, much smaller staircases in Mt. Tabor Park. From just a few steps to several dozen, each takes you to another interesting view or feature of the park.
Grab some sturdy shoes and a water bottle and head to Mt. Tabor Park for an exhilarating workout with a beautiful payoff. The park is open daily from 5 a.m. to midnight. Address: 6220 SE Salmon Street, Portland, OR 97215
