Sea Lion Caves is a roadside attraction just north of Florence, Oregon. Unlike some other roadside attractions, this one is worth the stop and worth the price of admission.
First discovered in 1880, this place has been thrilling travelers along US-101 since 1932. It's a privately-owned wildlife preserve and bird sanctuary.
The visitor center sits atop a cliff overlooking the Pacific Ocean. You may not think much of it as you drive by.
However, if you take the time to stop, you'll find that this place is well worth a visit. As you can see, the building and parking lot are just the tip of the iceberg. You can take an elevator down to the cave to view the Stellar sea lions who live there.
You can also walk out along the overlook to peek over the edge to see the sea lions relaxing on the cliffs below.
During the winter months, hundreds of sea lions enter the giant sea cave. However, there aren't always sea lions in the cave. These are wild, not captive animals - they do as they please.
In the spring, breeding and birthing time arrives. You're more likely to see sea lions outside of the cave on the cliffs during this season.
They'll stay outside of the cave for most of the summer. You can watch them swimming and playing in the water.
However, sometimes there may be no sea lions to view at all, or it may be too foggy to see them from above. Wildlife viewing is always unpredictable!
It's worth checking out the cave at any time of year, though, even if no sea lions are present. It's huge! It's as long as a football field and is as tall as a 12-story building.
In fact, it's the largest sea grotto in North America.
You may also see seabirds and maybe even a few whales during your visit.
No matter what you end up seeing and hearing, your visit to Sea Lion Caves is sure to be unforgettable.
