Oregon is a dream destination for waterfall chasers, home to some of the country's most incredible and commanding cascades. While there are quite a few famous falls in the state, there are definitely some hidden gems well-worth seeking out. Devil's Staircase is one of them. Located within the wilds of the Siuslaw National Forest, this Oregon waterfall is so hidden, almost nobody has seen it in person.
This might just be the most beautiful waterfall you've never seen in Oregon -- but we'll get to that in a moment.
To find this waterfall, you'll venture into the Siuslaw National Forest, 630,000 acres of pure #pnwonderland and a favorite hiking destination in Oregon.
Nestled within this wondrous expanse lies one of the Pacific Northwest’s hidden gems: Devil’s Staircase, a waterfall that's truly one of the most elusive in the state.
This waterfall is part of the eponymous Devil's Staircase Wilderness, an area designated in 2019 by the USDA Forest Services.
It's a dense old-growth forest, and the hike to the titular falls is not for the faint of heart. To get there you have to navigate through downed trees and thick concentrations of sword ferns and huckleberries, and over steep slopes and rocky ravines. The 5.6-mile trail is rugged, at best.
But for those willing to tackle this untamed adventure, the rewards are great. Numerous small and pristine creeks flow through the Devil’s Staircase Wilderness; two of these creeks, Wasson Creek and Franklin Creek, are designated as Wild & Scenic Rivers.
And it's in Wasson Creek where you'll find Devil’s Staircase, a low cascading waterfall with multiple sandstone ledges in a stair-step pattern. It's a picture-perfect cascade that's one of the most beautiful-yet-unseen waterfalls in Oregon; and, in our opinion, it is the most resplendent reward for your efforts!
Did you know about this elusive, hidden waterfall in Oregon? Have you been to the Devil's Staircase Wilderness of Oregon before, or know anyone who has?
