Cape Kiwanda is one of the most iconic places in Oregon; its hilly dunes and craggy coastline are almost otherworldly. Each year, many people come to see this spectacular natural wonder in person, which can be viewed from a large overlook. Unfortunately, this place of sublime beauty is also one of great tragedy; Cape Kiwanda State Natural Area has seen numerous deaths over the years. In an effort to make this vista safer, Oregon State Parks recently added new fences at Cape Kiwanda, which also provide access to previously off-limits ocean views.

Just north of Pacific City on the Oregon Coast, Cape Kiwanda State Natural Area juts commandingly into the sea.

This stark sandstone headland offers some of the best views on the Oregon Coast.

However, until now, accessing these views carried great risk.

Cape Kiwanda State Natural Area had seen many tragic deaths over the years, but in 2016, several teenagers perished while exploring the park -- all within the span of just a few months.

Fences and warning signs did exist, but park officials installed more precise signage along the cape, and increased ranger patrol at the park.

And earlier this year, Oregon State Parks debuted a newly designed fenced trail that allows hikers farther out on the scenic cape -- in a safe way.

The expanded area gives hikers access to views that were previously prohibited.

The fencing offers a narrow pathway out to views of the ocean and the area's unique geology, too.

The barrier wasn't the only new safety feature at Cape Kiwanda. In a controversial decision, officials also announced the official closure of driving and parking on the beach, and clarified where it was allowed in the surrounding areas.

This was due to accidents caused between motorists and pedestrians on the beach. Now, visitors and beachcombers can breathe a little easier while exploring the shores.

Cape Kiwanda is a place of great beauty. With these new standards in place, Oregonians can now safely explore and enjoy this scenic vista.
