Oregon's Columbia River Gorge may have suffered a few battle wounds in the September 2017 Eagle Creek Fire, but the breathtaking beauty of this region remains. While many popular trails are currently closed, there are still plenty of ways to get out and enjoy this part of the Beaver State. From wine tasting to fruit picking, here are 7 ways to celebrate the Gorge this fall:
1. Enjoy a meal at Bridgeside (Cascade Locks)
This historic restaurant has been a classic Gorge pitstop for over six decades. (You may remember it by its former name, Charburger). Enjoy a meal here while soaking in fantastic views of the Columbia River and Bridge of the Gods.
2. Explore the Columbia Gorge Discovery Center & Museum (The Dalles)
A visit to this museum will make your trip to the Gorge come alive. There are plenty of interactive exhibits that tell the story of the Oregon Trail pioneers, Lewis and Clark's voyage, Sacajawea and the Native Americans, as well as the geological history of the region. You also won't want to miss seeing live birds of prey up close during the raptor show.
3. Sip on some wine at The Gorge White House (Hood River)
Breathtaking scenery and flavorful wines are just few of the delights to be found at The Gorge White House. They feature a wide selection of wines, ciders, and delicious eats. The best past is, tastings are only $1 each!
4. Spend the night at the Hood River Hotel (Hood River)
Built in 1911, the Hood River Hotel is overflowing with history and charm. The rooms offer stunning views of the surrounding mountain and river, while the central location makes it easy to walk to eateries, brewpubs, and shops.
5. Go apple-picking at Draper Girls Country Farm (Parkdale)
For a true farm experience in the Hood River Valley, head to Draper Girls. They have a wide variety of apples and other assorted produce available for purchase and U-pick. The farm is open daily 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
6. Take in some art at the Troutdale First Friday Art Walk (Troutdale)
Many exciting finds are waiting to be discovered at the Troutdale First Friday Art Walk. This fun event is a great way to support local artists. It runs on the first Friday of every month February-December. For more information, visit their Facebook page.
7. Shop 'til you drop at Klindt's (The Dalles)
Walking into Klindt's Booksellers is like taking a step back in time. This little gem is the oldest bookstore in Oregon, complete with original floors, cabinets and bookshelves. You'll probably want to spend hours browsing in this cozy shop.
